An Remarkable Book in Every Way
"The impact of technology on history is one of the great overlooked forces of modern historiography" declares Adas at the beginning of this astonishing book. Focusing on the history of European colonial expansion after 1500, Adas convincingly argues that, more than anything else, it was the overwhelming superiority of European technology that led countries such as Britain and France to colonise Asia, Africa and the Pacific. The story is told in beautiful, polished prose. A rare achievement for an academic book - it's almost impossible to put down.

What makes this book even better is Adas's stubborn refusal to bow to the false God of Political Correctness. Note the title of the book, "MEN" The story of technology, let's face it, is a predominantly male one. The feminist school can moan all they wish, but on the evidence of Adas's book, their protests (and there have been a few) are hollow.

Likewise, Adas is not scared to give credit where credit is due. The author sings the praises of European nations and their technology - and why not? After all, the bewildering number of inventions that emerged from the Industrial Revolution have certainly made life easier for us today. Adas does caution that the Western way has not always been the best way, but it seemed to him hypocritical to attempt to perform a demolition job on European technology and values simply to satisfy the PC brigade.

The book begins with a look at first encounters between European and Asian and African cultures during the sixteenth century. Here, before the Industrial Revolution, European explorers admired the technology of the Chinese and sought to learn from it. But even here, Adas destroys Jared Diamond's theory that geography alone was responsible for European expansion. Even at this early stage, Europeans, encouraged by their Christian faith, realised that they perceived the world differently from other cultures. Unlike other peoples, for Europeans, nature was something to be tamed, not endured. This outlook was not due to geography alone.

The next two chapters lie at the heart of Adas's thesis, and show that indeed technology played a vital role in European expansion, and in European judgements of other cultures.

Then, Adas destroys the basic contention of Marxist historians by showing that, (gasp!) Britain and France actually wanted to help the people in their colonies through their technology! Although expolitation is not denied, Adas shows that European powers were not just playing the imperial game for their own ends.

The book ends by showing how all European powers began to seriously question the worthiness of their technology during the First World War. Far from undercutting his thesis, his reasons for the ascendancy of the USA as a world power proves his basic assumption even further.

All in all, a wonderful book which has received nowhere near the attention it deserves.

If your looking for a refrence book this is NOT it!
I purchased this book in the hope that I could use it as a refrence as well as a tutorial for using the Gnat compiler. It failed in both cases. Don't get me wrong, This is a good book if you have time to read it cover to cover. I do not! Further, the book never goes into much depth about the copiler and most of the data on the disk was unaccessable. My conclusion is that if this is your first time with Ada and you have time to spare this book is for you. Every one else should look else where.

Good text for an Intro to Ada95 class.
The text is an organized, well written, generously exampled introduction to Ada95 for the novice. It provides a good basis for object oriented programming using Ada95 for generics and privates (ADTs), it does not cover as fully or clearly inheritance and/or polymorphism. This book is apropriate for a 200 level CS class. I personally was disappointed with the amount of clear differentiation between Ada83 and Ada95. The section on tasking dismisses conditional Select entry as being beyond the scope of the book. Variant records are given too large a play. though they are a good intro to the thinking behind Ada polymorphism, in practice (Ada83) they are too code intensive and have serious short comings when used as private data elements. Overall, I think that this is a good, complete Ada95 introductory text. It is NOT an in-depth push the boundaries of the language or a "here's how to go from Ada 83 to Ada 95."

An excellent introduction to Ada95.
Ada 95 is nicely written easy to understand book. I use this book in beginning Ada 95 course that I teach. It explains programming concepts and Ada 95 constructs in a interesting way by citing examples. It comes with a CD which has GNAT Ada95 compiler (for PC/MAC/UNIX) as well as key documentations like ARM, AARM, and Rationale in text, html and postscript format. I highly recommend this book to any one interested in learning Ada 95 from beginning. Great book!!!

Good reference, but odd organization
Intended as a text for an introductory computer science course, Ada 95 Problem Solving and Design is thorough reference to the basics of Ada-95 programming, expecially considering the short time between the ratification of the standard and the publishing of this book. The features of the new language are seamlessly integrated; this is not an Ada-83 text with appendices regarding Ada 95. This is helpful for the beginning audience for which it is intended, but Ada-83 programmers may not notice new constructs until too late. This book's major distinction is its abnormal organization; Chapter 4, for example, deals simultaneously with the IF statement and writing your own packages! This serves to quickly introduce newcomers to the more powerful and complex structure of the language, but it sometimes adds confusion. All in all, I would recommend this book as a good introductory text to the language. A small note about the differences in Ada-83 and Ada-95 would have been helpful, but it successfully reaches its target audience.

Islamic & European Expansion: The Forging of a Global Order (Critical Perspectives on the Past)
Published in Hardcover by Temple Univ Press (August, 1993)
Author: Michael Adas

An excellent cross-cultural study
This historiographical study about Islamic and European colonization gives me insight into how colonizers assimilated with indigenous peoples and its ultimate effects. This book recognizes the ethnocentrisms prevalent in European history. The author argues for a more all-inclusive approach for studying European history, including the woman's role in societies. The maps and statistical analyses added to my understanding about how European history as taught in schools has in the past neglected gender and multiethnic interpretations.

Bravo!
This is an excellent book that depicts the different societies in Medieval Eurasia. At first I was hesitant about buying the book but when I did, it was the smartest thing I could have ever done! I would have given this book 5 stars however some parts were not that well developed. That's just in a couple spots though! You'll be taken into another world where you can actually feel the hardships and interacts between societies. The essays are written in such a magnificent way, it's no wonder this book is excellent! By buying this book for school or just curiosity it will be one that will sure to be in your house for a long time! A book that you'll WANT to read over and over! Enjoy!

If you want to learn something, get another book.
.
Some books give lots of facts and dates, others concentrate on opinion and discussion. This one does neither: little factual information, plenty of opinion, but leaning over backwards so far to avoid being controversial that you won't learn much.

Also bear in mind that this book is not designed to be read; it's a class book with "thought provoking" questions at the end of each chapter of the type "What do you think of....?". Another way for the author to stay non-committal.

Finally, it's expensive.

The Best In Its Field
I've been reading and comparing a few global history texts, and this one is in another class. If you're wanting a chronological narrative treading the traditional origins, greek, egyptian, indus valley . . . pattern then this text will not please you. If you're after a well written and presented text combining a good synthesis of fact with thought provoking analysis then this IS for you! I can see perhaps why lecturers might go for other more factual texts if they want to look at the global past in different terms to this one, however I think they can't go wrong with the themes Stearns and co. explore. Its got that perfect balance of fact and analysis. The boxed features and lengthy document extracts fit in well, and the lists of sources are well worthwhile.
So yes, you WILL learn a lot from this book because instead of just providing a series of events, people, terms and dates to rote learn it will get you thinking about the themes of global history, and encourage you to compare, contrast and evaluate. Its also one of the few "World History" texts that isn't a Western Civilization history with a few extra chapters thrown in. It really looks at the whole world with a fresh view, including a variety of cultures and experiences. In the Classical era you'll recieve valuable insights into nomadic peoples, providing the opportunity to understand differing means of organising society and allowing worthwhile comparisons that actually enhance understanding the more well trodden ground of Greece, Rome etc. Other fascinating coverage in this vein includes chapters about migration and the spread of peoples (Africans, Slavs and Polynesians), a whole chapter on the Mongol empire and the independence and nationhood movements of Latin America. I reiterate that these other perspectives are introduced in a way which enhances the overall understanding of world history, and are certainly not arbitary "pc" insertions. The authors do not shirk from showing the rise of the west, and the positives and negatives of imperialism. However it also allows us to see the limitations, and non-inevitability of this rise.
If you insist on reading a solely factual survey text, Traditions and Encounters by Bentley and Ziegler will do a great job, however for any student or enthusiast of World History, this book will open your eyes to new perspectives and really encourage you to engage your braincells!

The most comprehensive book regarding the entire world
While some may at first find this book to be daughting, or even uninformative, they would be surprised to learn that what the book presents is one of the most unbiased accounts of World History. As a student who was taught AP World History, I found the book to be incredible. Along with incredibly factual passages, the book also includes primary sources to aid learning. In additon, the book is completely unbiased; spending as much time if not more on African, Asian, and Western roots as it does on Rome, Egypt, or the Greeks. Also, the book spends extraordinay amounts of time discussing ALL of the civilizations of the world, not just the cut and dry topics that were explored in the years before. Despite what the other reviewer has said, this book is the most incredible source of history I have ever read, and should be standard in schools around the country. Regarding the expense, with a source as good as this, the cost is minimal. I found the book so helpful I actually purchased my own copy after I finished the cource.
