Interesting book on an interesting life
What I like most about this book is, of course, the photographs. However, this is also a biography. As this book chronicles his life, it presents relevant photos from the particular period.

What made me purchase this book was the fact that it contains many lesser known works. Everyone is familiar with his work in the national parks. Images of Half Dome and other expansive landscapes are pretty well known. But not all his work (nor all his BEST) was of these subjects. Such images as Boards and Thistles, Madrone Bark, Woman Winnowing Grain, and Leaves are some fine examples.

The text of this book is quite interesting and well written for the most part. There are some areas in which the text seems to jump around a bit, but all in all, it is an interesting read. Even if you do not have an interest in Adams' life (about which it is worth reading) you will enjoy the photography in this book. Also, it will expand many people's view of his body of work. It has definitely caused me to want to learn more about Adam's works and techniques.

Refreshingly Authentic
In this day and age where what seems to make it in this worldis that and those people who conform to the do's and don'ts ofcorporate America, or perhaps I ought say america with a small"a", FM is a most refreshing change that renews my belief that there are still original thinkers out there making personal and important statements that are not only artistic, but personal, cultural, politically relevant, psychologically astute and desperately needed. It is hard to hold onto the hope that individuals can grow up in this world, develop and hold onto and feel good about an authentic sense of self - so kudo's to Lisa Adams for creating this book, and for those whos work appears. I am always impressed by the work of Lauren Hartman who seems to really have found a path to her authentic self - may she never lose that, and may this book inspire others to find theirs.

Great collection of Mid 20th Century Photography Writing
Nancy Newhall was (and continues to be some 29 years after her accidental death) one of the best writers on photography I have read. She was a confidant of such luminaries as Alfred Stieglitz and Ansel Adams (she was his first biographer), the acting curator of the Department of Photography at New York's Museum of Modern Art in the 1940's, a driving force in the influential magazine and publishing concern Aperture, and an avid writer of photography books.

The writings collected in "From Adams to Stieglitz: Pioneers of Modern Photography" represent a wonderful cross-section of her work. Her knowledge of the history of photography is amazing as she writes about the motivation driving the development of the medium. Two of the pieces are remarkable:

"Controversy and the Creative Concepts," written in 1953, compares and contrasts the photographic style of the "Parisian School" as represented by Cartier-Bresson and the "Western School" represented by Group f/64, Alfred Eisenstaedt, and Helen Bourke-White. Worlds diametrically opposed, each equally valid. The article presents an important overview of 20th century photography.

"The Caption: The Mutual Relation of Words/Photographs," written in 1952 for the first issue of Aperture, looks at the different types of captions that can be attached to a photograph (if any: Stieglitz refused to put caption on his work) and how one should write them. This essay provides nice insight into the practice of photographic writing.

Anyone with an interest in 20th century photography will find this book an essential part of their library. Her writing style is unique and wonderful, an absolute joy to read.

Wealth of Details
Okay, so I grew up in LA, near cousin Hal! I can still honestly tell you that I enjoyed this book only slightly more because we are related. This effort is at once a culmination of years of ruminations and collecting; but at the same time, it is only the tip of the iceberg of this man's depth of knowledge of the field. Hal Lifson is systematically becoming a guru of 60's pop culture; his enthusiasm for the topic is semingly boundless. Hal is infused with the joys of cereal boxes and off-beat comic book characters; he displays knowledge about the musicians, action heroes and other zany characters who starred on their own TV shows. From toys to candies, sodas to girlie magazines, from foods to movies to sports icons, Mr. Lifson takes us on a happy journey down memory lane. I am hoping and betting that Hal's "1966" is destined to be one of his many cool collections to come! [Hopefully, he will "argue" and analyze more in the next one.] Though you are bound to come up with things that were left out, you won't be disappointed. You can't help but enjoy this easy read.

A Great Book About My Favorite Year
Thank you, Hal Lifson, for putting together a truly fabulous book about one of the best years ever, 1966. I have to admit that 1965 and 1967 were pretty cool, but '66 may actually have been the best--in my lifetime, anyway. Hal's book truly captures the flavor of popular culture of that very special time--the music, the TV shows, the movies, the ads, the toys, you name it. For me, '66 was James Bond ("Thunderball"), "T.H.E. Cat," "The Man From U.N.C.L.E.," "I Spy," "Get Smart," "Wild Wild West," "Mission: Impossible," Agent Zero M, the Beatles. It was simply the coolest time to be alive. Hal, who clearly was alive during those 12 months, does a marvelous job of taking us down memory lane in this terrific little book. It's filled with great photos and a quaintly personal account of all the great things that went on 37 years ago. For anyone who was there, I highly recommend you order this book as a means of flashing back to that fabulous time. You'll be glad you did!

Firing up dormant neurons and synapses
Reading this book I am struck by how much things have changed in 37 years - and yet, how much things have stayed the same.

I was ten in 1966, and I remember it well. I agree with Hal's opinion that 1966 was the signature year of the Sixties decade. Nearly everything that made the decade what it was was in place by the end of 1966.

Also, we now know that simply because short-sighted television executives canceled shows like "Star Trek" and "The Green Hornet," doesn't mean they weren't cool. They were, and Lifson is an effective advocate for them.

Hal has captured this important year in pop culture in words and pictures in a riot of colors. This is a book to store along with your high school yearbooks and other remembrances of the past.

Well recommended!

My classmate, Adam
Adam's story takes place when we were in 3rd grade in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma. His story touched all the students and we were very impressed with his book. Being a teacher, I like to share stories that touch me with my students. Adam's book is obviously written by a child for children. The students love the fact that they are around the same age Adam was at the time. They also like the idea that a child can actually write a book to be published. It gives them inspiration to be writers themselves.

A Treasured Friend
I bought this book more than a decade past at a convention about gifted children. I loved it then and marveled that a boy so young could write such an incredible book, and that there was a publisher so brave and generous to bring it to the public eye. Just recently, January 7, 2003, I revisted this old friend of a book and was even more inspired by its courage and vision than I was all those years ago. I am sure Adam Moore is all grown up now and I pray that he is happy and well. Thank goodness, I now discover via Amazon.com that his terrific book is still available to both kids and adults. This is a great story and one of a boy's triumph over enormous odds and terrible pain to regain his life. Broken Arrow Boy is a triumph of the will and the spirit that people will benefit from reading again and again. This is a book children and their parents should share. Broken Arrow Boy is like an old friend. It calls for many reunions.

Broken Arrow Boy
This book is incredible to have been written by a young boy. Adam Moore kept a positive attitude through many complications that occured after he fell on a arrow that went into his brain through his eye. He gives details of many medical procedures in a way that is interesting to children. I have read it to second graders every year since I discovered it, and they love it. I use it to encourage them to write about things that happen to them.
