Church Discipline and a more dynamic church for our Lord
The "Handbook of Church Discipline" by Jay Adams is a must for all pastors and lay workers alike. This book will give you clear, detailed information on a greatly overlooked area in our churches today, and yet it is concise enough to refer to at a glance whenever you need to. If you have ever had a disagreement, miscommunication, or unreconciled relationship with someone and wondered what to do, this book will direct you to the Scriptural answers laid out by Jesus Himself. Focusing on Matthew 18:15-17, Dr. Adams tackles an area where, sadly, few dare to tread. He details the process of both informal and formal discipline to give you a working knowledge of this subject to apply in your relationships with family, friends, your church, and unbelievers as well. If you wish to have a dynamic church for our Lord, and personal relationships with others that will reflect your love for God, I challenge you to read this book, search the Scriptures, and apply our Lord's teachings. May your life and ministry be blessed as mine has!

EVERY THINKING CHRISTIAN SHOULD READ THIS BOOK
Unfortunately, there are probably very few who will try to track down a copy..... "When I stopped studying the Bible in order to support what I believed, and started studying it in order to learn what to believe, I realized how wrong I was". (Mike Bardon, Former Oneness Pentecostal) If you can relate in any way to this quote, regardless of which particular "christian craziness" you've repented from, this book is also for you! Mr.Adams once again presents an insightful view of the real state of today's "professing" church, and it's woeful lack of biblical discernment with regards to many of the unbiblical practices and teachings currently found within the "Christian" church. He clearly describes not only the problems and how they became so prevalent, but he also provides real solutions to those individuals who may ask "what difference can I make?" Geared towards those who honestly wish to be part of the solution rather than add to the problems, "A Call to Discernment" is a trumpet call which perhaps will only be heeded by the seeming minority - those folks who are dissatisfied with the current flavour of "Experiential-Touchy-Feely-Don't-Think-Just-Receive" Christianity. Many will be offended by this piece, but those who seek the truths of God Himself as revealed in His Word will be refreshed and almost relieved by Mr.Adams' book (Like Elijah, it's always good to know you're not alone!). It's a must read for anyone who has ever found themselves involved in beliefs and/or practices that originate way,way outside of scripture, and may be useful in the healing process if you've ever asked yourself the question "How on earth could I have fallen for that one or strayed so far from Truth?" This book is not just a call to be more Discerning, but gives practical relevant help on how to actually BE more discerning!

From wise and prolific hand of Jay Adams
It all started in 1970, when Jay Adams courageously stood against the mental health establishment and proved from God's Word, the Bible, that believers who studied His Word were "competent to counsel" fellow believers, and that we did not need to rely on "psychology" to change peoples' hearts and their behavior! He completes what I would call a "trilogy" of biblical counseling books, with this book (the 1st was Competent to Counsel, the 2nd was A Theology of Christian Counseling). He also has written over 60 books that relate to counseling and living more godly lives. Every pastor should be familiar with Adams' works, and if they don't agree with him they should re-examine their viewpoint. This is an excellent manual of biblical counseling!

Truth Applied: A "Must Have" for Preachers
In Truth Applied, Dr. Jay E. Adams takes the reader through the principles outlined in Scripture for applying truth to life. The author contends that too often preaching has become dry and useless to the listener, and gives the impression that the Bible has no place in daily living. Here Dr. Adams takes the preacher to Biblical principles for applying the Scriptures to the hearts and lives of believers in the Church. If your preaching has become dry or application is a struggle for you as you preach, this book needs to be a part of your library.

Extremely Helpful Book
What To Do On Thursday is an extremely helpful book! It helped me learn how to take the scripture that I am reading and apply it to the daily situations that I am faced with. I am so glad for the skills that I learned from this book. It is very high on my "must read again list". I highly reccomend it to anyone who is interested in learning how to apply the scriptures to their life.

Christian Living in the home - Jay Adams
This is a great book on marriage and the family. Taking it from a Biblical perspective, Jay Adams does a great job of going through the husband's role, the wife's role and how they interrelate. If you want to find the Biblical formula for a successful marriage, get this book. If you think that the world has a better way and that true, Biblical roles are "archaic", don't buy this book, get a psychology book and get ready for divorce. I use this book for pre-marriage counselling. It works very well by going over one chapter each session.
It makes you happy as a newlywed again.
Adams's Christian Living in the Home is still the best book on its subject after all these years. I first read it before I got married, and my wife (who is from here in Taiwan) refers to its Chinese edition--the best book on its subject in her language--often. We both notice that we feel like the other spouse is more loving right after that spouse has reread this book recently. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED especially for its teaching about marriage, it is also very practical for dealing with children (we have three sons now). This book is my favorite extra thing to give as a wedding present at every wedding to which I'm invited.

In human terms
The book is full of wooden exegesis. The twisting of God's word to make it say something that it doesnt say. No doubt this book will be embraced by all those that seek to get out of a marriage commitment that they dont want.
Handy Summary for a Difficult Topic
Pastors increasingly are facing questions from parishioners regarding how the Bible itself defines marriage, divorce and remarriage. Offering answers based on church tradition is not sufficient -- persons want to know what God's Word has to say. In this book, Jay Adams provides a very concise summary of the Biblical understanding of marriage, divorce and remarriage.
I commend Adams for his loyalty to the Scriptures in this volume. On the one hand, he departs from the ultra-traditionalists who would say that any remarriage after divorce is sinful. On the other hand, he doesn't join ultra-progressives who would imply that divorce really isn't a major theological issue in today's society. While I do not agree with his interpretation of the Matthew 18 passage as applying to divorce proceedings among two Christians, he offers many other excellent, helpful points.
This small yet substantial book is the best treatment I have found to date on what the Bible itself says on this knotty church issue. Every church leader's bookshelf should have a copy. This volume is well worth the price!
A Great Suppliment to John Murray's book
Mr Adams has done a fine job in dealing with the issue of divorce and re-marriage. He elaborates somewhat on the issues John Murray does not, and that is why I say that this book is a great suppliment to Murray's work on divorce.

Very hard to read, even for the intelligent
Unfortunately, Adams is not very clear on many of his statements. It makes for long, boring reading - certainly not an encouragement when you have to read it for class!
COMPETENT TO COUNSEL

Little Book - Big Impact
This "new classic" (20 years old) is a concise exploration of what it means to be godly and how it is achieved. Since Adams is often criticised for being too 'legalistic,' this is a good book for a grace-oriented care-free guy like myself to spend time reading. It will inform you and encourage you.
