No Regrets Here!! This is the BEST book EVER!!
I am a new teacher and I am trying to build up a library of resources. I bought this book hoping it would be helpful. I am so glad I purchased it. The activities are simple and concise, but they were developed with the children in mind. They will enrich your higher kids and strengthen your lower readers. Great for Kindergarten to intro basic phonics, super for first grade!! They will be fun to use in the classroom. The book is also FULL of information about phonics and linguistics. Do not hesitate purchasing this book.

A must have!!!
If you are teaching kindergarten through second grade, you must have this and use it in your classroom. It has activities that covers every area of phonemic awareness. It gives you many activities for each section so your children will never get bored with your lessons. Uses all modalities. I can't say enough good things about this book.

An excellent book for kindergarten teachers!
This book was recommended to me by my sister (also a k teacher), and I used these phonemic awareness activities during the last school year -- not only did the activities help my whole class overall, but they also helped me identify which kids were struggling and needed more help. And they were fun for the kids, too, which made teaching it so much easier. My school has been buzzing about phonemic awareness and phonological awareness for a couple of years now, but we haven't had a good way to actually teach it directly until we used these activities. I highly recommend this book!

Interesting information about the dollar bill!
I am a third grade teacher and this is a super book to use when teaching about money. It's a story about how a dollar gets passed on from person to person. At the bottom of every page there are interesting facts about the dollar bill, such as the serial number, what a dollar bill is made of, etc. Students will find this book enthralling!

great intro to a lesser-known Egyptian historical period
Written by two of the leading experts in the field of early Ancient Egyptian history and prehistory, this book surveys the current theories surrounding the state formation process. It details the major sites which have been excavated and are under investigation, as well as the theorised contact with the inhabitants of the Western Desert and the Near East. It is a typical well written excellent little Shire book, with much compact information and many illustrations. All in all, it is an excellent source of information about Protodynastic Egypt for scholars and interested laypeople.

Building Block for all levels of firefighting.
After studying this well written publication from front to back I can professionally say that all NFPA standards are demonstrated and tactfully explained. All levels of firefighters can use the information in this fine book to build on from "rookie" up to "Chief". The book has easy to read and follow information, and very basic graphics and easy to comprehend diagrams. As an instructor I can not recommend a better textbook for the modern firefighter.

One of the BEST firefighting books out
Im just starting out with my FF1 classes and the book is a lot better then the third editon, more picture, deeper explenations, and most important more topics, the state requres the Essentials of Firefighting 3rd or 4th edition The fourth edition is by far the best, it covers allmost everything you MIGHT encounter on a scene......This is a breat Firefighter book, although it doesnt cover any medical ops it just as good.

Very good
Essentials of Firefighting is one of the books that will make a firefighter's career easier. So much is covered in depth. The chapter's are larger and in greater depth than IFSTA's 3rd edition. New Chapter's including building insrtuction make this book easy to follow. The book does lack Hazardous Materials, Auto Extrication and any Aircraft firefighting infromation. Other than those topics, all grassroots firefighing is covered very well.

Every fire service that I know of uses this book as the core to its training program. This book contains the Firefighter 1 & 2 level knowledge. For those that are more advanced in their careers, you will need to go to IFSTA's job specific books. This book is the "core values" of the fire service that every firefighter needs to know. Even paramedics should at least own this book to understand what firefighters do because they work so close together. IFSTA has really done a quality job with this book. It's too bad that there isn't more rescue, Haz mat and auto ex in this book, but then we'd have a 1500 page book. The medical system has to suffer with huge texts, we don't really need to continue that tradition into the fire service. 700 pages is enough. It would be nice if there were 2 volumes. That way the weight is reduced per book and there can be more information.

If you want to be a firefighter, you need this book. If you are a paramedic or police officer it would be good to know some of the information in this book because at a scene we all work so closely anyway. We need to understand the roles that each of us has and the capabilities of the people we work with. You cannot be in emergency services and not own this book. The information is too valuable.

how would you feel if you had dyslexia
After anyone starts reading the book Adam Zigzag you will never want to put it down. It's a book with a lot of emotional attachments. You just want to jump in the story and help the boy and his family finds out how to deal with their problems. It is a fiction book that will keep you on the edge of your seat.
This boy named Adam was born with dyslexia. When he was little he would try and read to his family and he couldn't. Despite not being able to read as he got older he became popular and very good looking. He is older but he still has problems with reading that he can't fix. It just kept getting worse. So he had to move to a different school to get help. Ever since he was little he has always had tutors to help him responding to the book he would be reading.
The other main character is Caroline. She is Adams older sister. She is normal and doesn't have any disabilities. She doesn't like how her brother has problems but she tries to deal with them anyways. She tries her best to help him in any way he might need. In the middle of the story she gets in a fight wit her friend and her mom helps her out. They are a very close family and always there for each other. Since they have to move she looses all her friends anyways. Out of the whole family it seems like she is having the most trouble with everything because she is so embarrassed.
Adam Zigzag is the perfect title for the story because every time Adam would read he would relate and compare how all he sees is zigzags and scribbles. Even in the book when he was little his friends would call him zigzag as a nickname to try to encourage the fact he can't read.
Every character in this book demonstrates the thinking behavior persistence. For example, when Adam had to try his best to get out of that New York school he never gave up. He worked until he got the grades to get out. No matter what happened he had to prove to everyone that he could do it. Caroline had to keep working on maintaining her friendship because if it was over she wouldn't have any other friends. The parents are persistent on trying to convince Adam to keep going to school and trying to peruse reading.
When they were little they all lived together but Adam would just go to different schools. In high school he was the most popular guy and was still having trouble reading. He also had trouble doing his homework and turning it in. His grades were falling and they were getting so bad that he had to transfer schools all the way back down in New York. He had to go by himself and live without his family in a home.
The end of this book is just as interesting as the beginning. Adam Zigzag never gets boring for one second. But then again it all depends on what the reader enjoys. Most people would think this book was exciting and worth while to read. It was sad to think that a guy couldn't read even though he tries his hardest. Knowing that the harder you try and the more you think about it, you will never accomplish reading because you have a disease.

Adam Zigzag
From the moment I read that the plot of this novel concerns dyslexia on the back cover of this book, I knew that this was an ideal story for me. This is the first book I've read by this author, and I really enjoyed it. I like the way she describes things and uses topics that are easy to relate to. I feel there are many good points of this book, even though the vocabulary is too basic for the audience she intends to have read her story. It's told in first person by two of the characters, Adam and Caroline. It deals with issues that young people of today might be familiar with, and offers comfort to those who are having the same kinds of problems mentioned in the book. It is reassuring for them to know that they are not alone. This story takes place in present day New York City. It is about the childhood and teen years of a dyslexic boy, Adam. He calls himself "Adam Zigzag" in secret. His sister, Caroline, is dyslexic as well, but she has a far milder case than Adam. The story is told from the viewpoints of both Adam and Caroline. Adam goes through much testing to find his strengths and weaknesses, and to find which schools can meet his needs. Caroline, in the midst of all this, is jealous of all the attention that Adam is getting from everyone. When he gets in to the same school as Caroline, she resents him more. "And then Adam enrolled. Suddenly here comes this blond, angelic boy. 'Oh he's so cute!' everyone said. No one had to tell me I was definitely not 'cute'. No cheekbones. Too skinny. A gigantic nose." Many other things happen throughout the course of this story. Adam has to have his bar mitzvah and he's worried that he won't be able to read from the Torah. He goes from school to school and interview to interview. He becomes more and more frustrated, and Caroline becomes embarrassed by his behavior. He begins to hang out with the wrong crowd. Caroline feels she should tell someone, but as she said, "Adam had enough bad stuff going on." And she "just couldn't add to it." Adam eventually realizes he needs to change his ways to be successful. "Sometimes when I think about all the money and time my parents have spent on me while I was [goofing] off in classes at school, I could just shoot myself. I wonder: did any of the time I spent with previous tutors pay off?" Adam Zigzag is a wonderfully written book to which young people of today can relate. Right from the beginning, the characters are introduced and the scenario becomes familiar. If you are a person who is dyslexic or close to someone who is, or someone who has been having problems hanging out with the wrong crowd, this book could be exceptionally good for you. I highly recommend it. Kara ... is a freshman... who enjoys books that reflect on life.

Enlightening
This book really enlightened me. It gives a lot of information about a very important man who was a great historian, among many other things. I had heard so much about Dr. J.H.Clarke but knew nothing about his personal life before reading this book. Also, although I had read some of his books I never had the opportunity to attend any of his lectures, seminars etc. and... see him in person to learn more about this man - I know he frequently enlightened many with his small group settings at "Clarke House" in Harlem, New York and that he also gave lectures at many of the City of New York colleges, and at other sites for those who were fortunate enough to attend. Many questions I would have asked him, if I had ever met him, were addressed in the book. I often wondered about his path in life and gained a lot of information about his path while reading this book. The book is easy to read and just about the right length. I suggest the reader digest the words a bit at a time, to retain the information given. It was pointed out to me that this book was shaped by information the writer gleaned from Dr. Clarke himself. It was not just a compilation of information obtained from other books. The writer actually heard Dr. Clarke tell her about his long life from his humble beginnings to the later years. Dr. Clarke enlightened many and so did this author.

greet book
THIS BOOK IS EXCELLENT, IT GAVE VERY GOOD INFORMATION AND PICTURES ON A MAN WHO HAS DEDEICATED HIS WHOLE LIFE TO THE AWAKENING OF THE AFRICAN MIND AND THE INVESTIGATION OF OUR HISTORY. HE WAS TRULY A MASTER TEACHER AND A TRUE PAN-AFRICANIST. I HAVE READ SOME OF HIS BOOKS AND I HAVE SOME OF HIS VIDEO LECTURES ON TAPE. I JUST SHURE HATE THE FACT THAT I NEVER GOT TO MET DR. CLARKE IN PERSON. HE HAS BEEN A TRUE INFLUENCE ON MY LIFE AND THE LIFE OF MANY OTHERS. I WILL MAKE SHUREM PERSONALLY THAT HIES DREAM OF AFRICAN-CENTERED, OR AFRICAN-CENTRIC SCHOLARSHIP AND PAN-AFRICAN NATIONALISM AS WELL AS AFRICAN WORLD LIBERATION IS KEPT ALIVE.

If you're thinking The Room, move on
After Requiem for a Dream, I thought the Room would be a good book to read. I was expecting an emotionally disturbing, but thought provocking book, much like Requiem, but the Room was not like the well know Selby novel. Room is a wandering and discusiting book, with discriptions of rape and tourute that seem to come from the mind of a sick and twisted man. Unlike Requiem for a Dream, Selby is not shocking yet intriging, in the Room, Selby is just sick. The plot is weak, and there is no sticking moral message in the book. It was promising at first, but left me very disapointed. I highly recomend not reading this book.

Writing is good therapy...
but not always a good book. The room, has an interesting premise, maybe for a short story. But for a novel it gets tiring quick. It doesn't seem to have much of a point other than to offer up two different fantasies of an inmate: one very violent and disturbing, then other benevolent. Whatever, they both get old. Some of the writing is the most disturbing I've ever read, which is fine, if it has a point. I don't believe it does. I have read two other Selby books, Last Exit and Requiem.. both are far superior to Room, Requiem is a masterpiece! So if you haven't read any selby go to one of those two first.

I Have Mixed Feelings
On the one hand this book does a pretty good job delving into the tedium that a prisoner must experience and it does a pretty good job exploring in a realistic manner the fantasies in which a criminal pyschopathic personality might engage. But to tell the truth, I got bored with the book. Maybe that's one of the points--incarceration in not an exciting thing.

Basically, the main character, the prisoner, engages in two alternating fantasies. In the first, he dreams about using his intellect to blow the cover off of the corrupt law enforcement system. In his mind he becomes the hero of the oppressed and the hero of reformers making it all the way to capital hill to regale the senate with his misfortunes. I don't doubt that many criminals engage in self-deceptive ego trips, but after 10 or so pages of redundant self-aggrandizement the reader gets the idea. The second line of fantasies involves the brutal torture of the two police officers that arrested the prisoner. In his mind he dehumanizes the policemen in almost every way imaginable. Again, I don't doubt that many convicts engage in this manner of perverse self-pleasure, but it does get somewhat monotonous as every last detail of the gruesome fantasies are laid out time and time again.

This was my first Selby book and it is obvious that he is a talented writer. I am going to give his other books a try.
