Good old-fashioned food without all the fat
What a pleasant surprise this book has been! I bought it from a discount table at an agricultural fair in Maine and didn't really expect much. It is by far my husband's and my favorite cookbook. The meals are "real food," stuff you can serve your fussy kids and fussy guests. I haven't been disappointed with anything I've tried to date. We highly recommend the Spaghetti with Spicy Italian Meat Sauce -- it is better than any spaghetti sauce we have ever tried, always gets raves when we serve it and yet it has far less fat. Awesome! Other favorites: No Fry Chimichangas, Old Fashioned Beef Stew, Easy Chili, Sweet Potato Puff (great for Thanksgiving and less than half the fat of a version I used to make, and no one can tell the difference). This book is excellent.

Low fat nutritous food without compromising your taste buds!
I have tried a number of the recipes in this book and haven't tasted one that I did not like. The recipes are not only low-fat, Tribole also incorporates healthy, nutritious ingredients into the recipes. I have tried numerous low fat and healthy cookbooks and none compare to this one in keeping the dishes delicious. It's the only cookbook that stays on my counter!

Easy, quick, and most of all delicious
This cookbook is wonderful. The recipes that I've tried to date have been easy, quick, and most of all tasteful! My family has enjoyed the meals I've prepared, and haven't even noticed that the fat and calories have been trimmed out of them (they can be very picky about low-cal/low-fat recipes). We enjoy deserts, and really loved the carrot cake and dark chocolate brownies! I would highly suggest this cookbook to anyone!

Superior Writing
Evelyn Horan out did herself and "Jeannie, ** book one" with the penning of "Jeannie, A Texas Frontier Girl - Book Two." Jeannie and Helga are growing up and the transmission is so smoothly crafted that readers will feel as if they were right there watching. The Author's portrayal of Texas during the late 1880's is insightful and her depiction of family life during that period of time rings with warmth and truth. Horan's talent with authentic dialogue and rich characterizations carries readers from one adventure to the next while subtly painting a picture of history. I predict great success for Evelyn Horan and the "Jeannie, A Texas Frontier Girl" four book series. Readers both young and old look forward to growing up with Jeannie and her friends. Congratulations Evelyn for giving young readers a new heroine and a noteworthy role model.

A Series Sure to be a Favorite for Years to Come!
In a letter to the author, Angie Rose, Editor of Christian Books,
writes the following review:
Children and their parents will surely enjoy Jeannie, A Texas Frontier Girl Book Two in what is a four book series by Evelyn Horan. The setting of 1880's Texas frontier unfolds as vividly as a movie througout the l47 pages of heart-warming adventures shared by Jeannie as she lights the pages with her enthusiasm and kindness. Book Two follows the bright heroine, her family, her ever loyal friend Helga, and some wonderful new friends.
The girls share new adventues and reminisce about old ones as well. The book speaks of friendship true and loyal, girlhood pure and simple, and the love of family and country.

Evelyn Horan's descriptive narrativre style of writing lends itself so well to historical fiction that the readers almost see the characters before their very own eyes.Jeannie is a bit older and wiser and we follow her change from girl into a young lady. One of my favorite chapters is "Helping Ma". In it, we find Jeannie helping her Ma in the kitchen. While reading, I almost smelled the cooking! Children will enjoy sharing Jeannie's hopes and joys as they follow her through the months of training both her horse and herself through new accomplishments and goals.

My only disappointment was that I did not have Book Three in my hand to read right away as Evelyn Horan cleverly leaves us on the edge of our seat, anxiously awaiting what happens next.

The book also lends itself wonderfully to teachers and parents alike. They will find in it great reference points to begin discussions about many subjects. A kaleidoscope of what growing from girlhood to young womanhood is all about. Jeannie, A Texas Frontier Girl series is sure to become a favorite for years to come.

Only Good Things Can Be Said About This Book!
At her site, Professional Reviewer and Editor, Lisa of Bookreviewcafe.com, writes concerning her review of Jeannie, A Texas Frontier Girl Book Two:

In Book Two of Jeannie, A Texas Frontier Girl, only good things can be said about it! A very simple story involving a very complicated girl;Jeannie! Turning fourteen, Jeannie is getting to be a mature, young lady. Many things are in store for her and her friends this year. The girls learn to cook, sew and crochet and take care of Helga's new baby brother. These new skills will help them in the future. Living in the 1880's is hard work. You learn to grow up fast. Jeannie's wish for her own horse ranch might be coming true due to unexpected money. Will she be old enough next year to have a ranch? Who will she want to work on her ranch with her? She might have someone in mind! Evelyn Horan has a genuine flair for writng. The main characters Jeannie, Helga, Billy Joe and Henry all have great personalities. You really end up knowing them all personally! This series-four books in all-is a wonderful collection to keep for your children as they get older. Such wholesome stories should be read aloud to kids of all ages!

Golden Books PLEASE reprint the Fourteen Bears!
What a great memory from childhood. The story and illustrations will stay with you for a lifetime. I havn't seen a copy since elementary school but I can still remember the bears in their treehouses and skating on their pond and playing in the Sun. I can't say enough about the book. I hope Golden books reprints it soon so I can buy it for my daughter and my seventeen neices and nephews. It is a classic book that every child should have. My hats off to Evelyn Scott and Virginia Parsons for putting together such a great book.

Add me to the list - PLEASE bring back the Fourteen Bears!!
My younger sister and I have had many discussions through the years about The Story of Fourteen Bears and how much we enjoyed it. The copy we had was taken by our older sister to her elementary school class to read to her students in the 1980's and never made it back to us (you can tell we've not quite forgiven her for that one yet). We never even knew that the Summer and Winter version existed until we started looking to replace our book a few years ago. She's currently considered buying a first edition because she figures the price (and value) can only go up based on the number of people who really, REALLY want to re-visit this cherished childhood fairy tale bearland - us included.

I feel certain that if Random House republished either of the titles they would be snapped up readily - they are classic good, simple storytelling enhanced with imaginative and detailed illustrations that will never go out of style. I know that if Evelyn Scott & Virginia Parson's work is made available again I will be purchasing MANY copies to give to family and friends. Even if the book were to cost [price] it would still beat the heck out of the current price tag, and you could feel comfortable letting a child hold the book and disappear into the enchanting world it depicts. This book obviously achieved its ultimate goal quite well - transporting us to another place, where bears wear tutu's and spectacles and eat different flavors of honey... a place we want to go back to even as adults!

Random House Considering Reprint!!
Random House responded to my email inquiry stating that they are currently considering bringing this book back into print. They will be more likely to decide favorably if they receive more requests for it. I urge everyone who would like to see this classic in reprint to send them a letter or email today.

Jeannie, A Texas Frontier Girl Among Five Favorites!
Jackie Miller, Co-Founder of Authorsden, discussed five of her favorite books on the Authorsden Radio Show hosted by Roger Vizi on August 24,2002, at ll:00 A.M., Phoenix, Arizona.

Quote: "This is a children's book for ages 8-14 and is Book One in a series of four. Moms, this is an excellent, wholesome book for any avid reader. It reminds me of Little House on the Prairie but it isn't as long- 134 pages. It takes place on the West Texas Frontier in 1884 and will give your child a sense of what it really was like to be a little girl growing up in that time period. Jeannie is a spunky 12 year old who rides horses, picks berries, and is full of adventure during the summer break. But she must also pitch in to help her family during harvest time - picking cotton - and that is hard work!!! Education was also a privilege in those days - a new concept for many of our kids. This book is a great discussion starter for many topics - no running water, haviing to bathe in a portable metal tub in the middle of the kitchen...

Evelyn has received rave reviews for Jeannie, A Texas Frontier Girl and she is also releasing Book Two very soon.
...BUY IT !"

Good Introduction to Historical Fiction!
Sally Murphy Book Reviewer of Adolescent Literature.com writes, when Jeannie first lays eyes on the beautiful black colt with the white star, she resolves to ask her father about him. She is sure she can tame him. Despite some misgivings, Pa agrees that she can have him. Thus begins the adventures of Jeannie, A Texas Frontier Girl, Book One. Twelve-year-old Jeannie shares many adventures with her new horse, whom she names Diamond, together with her faithful dog, Ole Blue, and her friend Helga, recently arrived from Germany. Jeannie confronts many dangers, part of living in West Texas in the l880s. When Diamond is stolen by Indians she must try to get him back, when threatened by a rattlesnake she must act quickly, and when she and Helga are almost caught in a tornado, she relies on her instincts to survive. This is the first book in a series of four tracking the adventures of Jeannie and her friends. Along with her many adventures, Jeannie is shown learning about life, love, and friendship, as well as strengthening her faith in God. The book gives a great insight into the life of the ranches on the Texas frontier in the late l9th century and will appeal especially to children sharing the times at school. Evelyn Horan is a teacher-counselor who has previously had numberous children's articles published in both secular and religious publications. Her wholesome writing would make a good introduction to historical fiction for young people.

What A Joy To Read...
"Jeannie, A Texas Frontier Girl--Book-one" By Evelyn Horan, is a book that I, (a grown man in his late 40's) honestly enjoyed from the moment I first opened the book.

The charaters (Jeannie and Helga) with their many adventures, perils, and dangers, sortof reminded me of Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn. (A female version of course.) A couple of spunky twelve-year-olds attempting to live and enjoy life in the 1800's.

I loved this story and anyone that may have enjoyed The Little House On The Praire Series will love it!

The character are believable, the dialogue one of 'The Old West', and the plot both, educational and exciting. A very appealing combination.

I look forward to the next book in this delightful series!

Best cookbook in my collection
My husband & one of my daughters have to eat high-fiber, low-fat foods. In search of a cookbook that would provide me with healthy, low-fat, good-tasting versions of our favorite foods, I bought this book. All of the recipes I've tried so far taste great. No one can tell they're low-fat recipes. I'm so glad I can prepare low-fat food that doesn't taste like cardboard!

Fantastic Food
I can't say enough good things about this book!! I bet I have a dozen low-fat or diet cookbooks collecting dust on my shelves because the recipes either don't taste good, they are too difficult to make, or I can't find the ingredients. Everything I have made from this cookbook has been fantastic and quick and easy, too. My husband loves what I cook now, and it is good for us, too. I am planning on purchasing her first Homestyle cookbook and getting rid of all the rest of my low fat cookbooks!

Simple, healthy, and flavorful recipes - outstanding!
By far, this is my favorite cookbook in the entire world. My wife and I can never agree on anything (I like spicy and flavorful, she prefers blander dishes), but we both love every recipe we've tried from this book! The recipes are not too complex to make, most can be completed fairly quickly, they don't require many (if any!) exotic ingredients, and they taste fabulous.

The inclusion of complete nutritional information (including fiber, for you Weight Watchers folks who are computing points) is an added bonus. I lent this cookbook to a coworker, and I've purchased another copy because I just can't live without it!

What Happens When Women Pray
The book is excellent. I am looking for the Leaders Guide. I am organizing a conference for the women of my church with this book and I need the Leaders Guide. Has anyone found it?

What Happens When Women Pray
This is a wonderful book on Prayer. We want to use is as the basis of a study group but I seem to have the same question as all of the other reviewers. Where can I find the Leader's guide? If anyone knows please e-mail me at ( ) Thanks.

Don't miss this fantastic book on prayer!
This book has been a great help to me and to other women at Bryn Mawr College in understanding what prayer is, and how to pray more effectively. Christians on our campus are realizing more and more how central prayer is to loving and serving God. I talked with another friend who had read it, and we were surprised to discover that we had found it so helpful that we had outlined each one of Evelyn Christenson's points. If I can come up with the cash, I want to buy a copy of this book for every Christian woman on campus. (It's that good!) If you have any questions about prayer, or even if you are unsure if prayer is really that important, definitely get this book.

Lots of laughs, but something is missing
This book follows the Gilbreth family's adventures from just after their dad has died until all the children are grown and married. The mishaps are humorous, the children are realistic and funny, and the plot is inspiring. However, this book lacks the one element that made its predecessor so incredibly wonderful: Dad.

Dad was the one who had the hilarious techniques, the atrocious standards, the crazy ideas. He was the one with the impossible ideals, superb gifts, and vibrant personality. Dad was the one who insisted that his home become a model of motion study and a picture of order. Incidently, Dad was the one that gave Cheaper by the Dozen its laughs, its suspense, and its plotline. Without him, Belles on Their Toes is funny, but feels lifeless because there is no Dad there to knock someone's elbow on the table.

I did enjoy reading this book and some parts had me laughing out loud. But if you're looking for another gripping story like Cheaper and the Dozen, look elsewhere. The main conflict of this book is Mother's struggle to send all of her children through college. It is a story about learning, maturing, and accomplishing goals.

I loved the book because it is neat to follow a family.
I loved this book. I read it after I had read "Cheaper By the Dozen" which is a book of the events before the events in this book. This is like a sequal to that. I loved them both and I wish there were a ton more books about this family. I think it would be a dream come true to meet some of them. It is so neat to read a whole families life story and it is even more fun to have such an interesting family as the Gilbreths. Sometimes I don't know how they lived. They are really neat people and they inspired me in the weirdest ways. I would recomend this book to everyone of any age. But first you should read "Cheaper By the Dozen" it is up to you but it is more fun to read it in order. I think you should give at least one of these books a try, they are great I think and they would make great gifts if you need a good gift, also. I hope you take my advise and read these books.

If you want a good laugh.....
For those of you who have read Cheaper by the Dozen, you know that the antics of the Gilbreth children make even the saddest person attempt to hide their smiles. Well, Belles on Their Toes continues the legacy of laughs and just getting through life.

This book begins three days after Cheaper by the Dozen leaves off, three days after the death of Dad. Belles on Their Toes talks about the struggles of a family trying to get back on their feet after such a terrible loss. Mother has to go away to Europe for 5 weeks, to make a name for herself, so Anne, the oldest of the children at age 18, is left in charge. Through chicken pox and hte cook being arrested, the family manages to stick together.

In an inspiring story about self sacrifices, and stepping up to fill the shoes of Dad, the Gilbreths pinch pennies to keep the family from splitting up. A rare mix of inspiration and humor, Belles on Their Toes is a must-read for everyone!

Very good and interesting reading
I really enjoy the work of this new and upcoming author. This author definetly needs more exposure. this is the second book I read by Ms Palfrey and it was indeed a page turner. I like the fact that she did not give a description of the main characters, you had to make up your own. My characterization of Walter changed as I read and whether I was liking this character or not. I must say I enjoyed the romance, the mystery, the family scenes in Georgia, the concerts at the camp ground. Women in the prime of their lives deserves some romance and excitement also. So, kudos to Vivian! There is nothing I can say that I disliked. I would recommend this book to all.

Breath-taking and tantilizing
This was the first book that I have read by Evelyn Palfrey, and I must say that I am in the process of ordering her other two books. Vivian was a strong woman and although no descriptions were given in the book none had to be about her, Marc, or any of the other characters. The story that the author wrote is something that happens in everyday life. She added a twinge that made me not to want to put the book down. I look forward to reading Palfrey's other two books, Three Perfect Men and Dangerous Dilemmas, as well as any future books.

One book you will not put down!
This is my first read by this author. I was interested in reading Dangerous Dilemnas; however, it was on back order. I was thoroughly surprised by this author's writing style. She has a way of pulling you into the characters. This book is definitely a one day read. You will not be able to put this book down once you pick it up. I fell in love with Vivian because I could understand her decisions. I feel most women would walk away and leave a small baby that is conceived in adultry, however, Vivian had a special love, one that was able to look past her husband's infidelities and see that the child was innocent and needed her love. I think I would have done the same thing, although it would have been hard. I fell in love with Marc and wished that I could clone him for some of my single friends. Marc is the man most women dream of. He had a patient unconditional love for Vivian.I enjoyed this book so much that I ordered her first book. This is our book club's monthly reading and I know that we will have a lively discussion about this one. Keep up the good work! I love forward to many more books.

CHEAPER BY THE DOZEN

Format: Paperback,1st ed., 180 pages ISBN: 0553272500 Publisher: Bantam Doubleday Dell Books for Younger Readers Pub. Date: February 1981 Other Formats: Hardback Recommended Age:Third grade and up

Wonderful...Once you start to read the first page you wont be able to put the book down. This perfect way to spend a rainy day. You will be very amused when you read about the hilarious events of the Gilbreth family. The family of twelve children have many adventures you will enjoy reading. The father is almost crazy and a very successful business man. He is very strict and overprotective. He won't let his daughters wear make up or dress the way they like to. They slowly change his mind and begin to dress their way. He thinks his children can do anything and is also believed he could do anything. He loved jokes and laughing and you will love the practical jokes they play on each other. The rich family loves to go to movies then out for ice cream. They also spend their summers at the beach, where their Dad forces them to learn to swim. He wants them to learn as much as possible about everything so he always finds a way to teach them new things. As an efficiency expert he made sure that everything was done in a time efficient way. It was a sin to waste time in the Gilbreth house and he was constantly coming up with new ways to save time. The Dad in the story liked to parade around and show off his kids. Although this was embarassing to some of the kids as they got older Dad found it hilarious. The mother also was sometimes embarrassed or insulted by the attention they got or the comments other people made. This book will keep you laughing right up to the last chapter when Dad dies. The book is a mixture of humor and then sadness at the ending. This is an excellent book that everybody should read. I recommend this book for anyone that knows how to read no matter how old or young!

The Best Book I've Ever Read!!!!!!!!
This is by far the best book out there!!!! It has changed my life and the way that I think about food and eating. I have given up the good food-bad food mentality and learned to accept food for what it should be: nourishing and pleasureable.

I will NEVER diet again and I have even lost weight!!!! I feel more at peace with myself and with my relationship with food.

You MUST read this book!

Finally!!
I read this book at a time in my life when I was ready to hear it, and I believe it will only be useful to you if you're ready to listen. I'm not big on self-help books but I've tried about a thousand diets and have never - NEVER - managed to maintain weight loss for any great length of time. For whatever reason, this book spoke to me. It's not a diet, it's not some kind of program. It's a way to look at every aspect of your life in a totally new (and positive) light. With diet after diet for the past 20 something years, all I ever felt was resentful that I couldn't just eat like a "normal" person. Finally, I can. And if you open yourself up to what this book has to say, have FAITH and PATIENCE, it will change your life. I just want to thank the authors for writing it!

Truly revolutionary and life-changing
My daughter and I have read this book, and it has changed our lives! I myself have thrown away my scale as well as my life-long diet mentality. I feel like a weight has been lifted off my shoulders, that weight being guilt and self-criticism. I've also started to look at others differently, realizing that people come in all sorts of shapes and sizes. Additionally, this book has greatly helped my daughter recover from anorexia, with which she battled for about a year. I recommend this to any woman (or man!) who has ever put a bite of food in her mouth!
