Legal side of the game made easy
Mr. Abrams' book is an easy to read journey through the history of legal proceedings in baseball. His knowledge about the law gave this book the potential to be hard to understand, but he clearly explains the law in terms that any non-lawyer can understand.

This is not necessarily the book for the casual fan, but if someone is really interested in the law within the baseball framework, this is a great starting place. The anti-trust exemption, reserve clause, free agency, and collective bargaining are among the topics covered by Abrams.

Abrams has worked as an arbitrator for major league baseball, so he is not afraid to give his opinions to the major cases that have affected baseball throughout the years. He does an excellent job of penetrating to the core of the complex decisions and explaining them in clear terms.

This book clearly covers the objectives it sets out to cover. This book should be on the shelf of any serious fan that wants to know more about the legal side of the game.

You don't need to be a lawyer to understand this book!
Anyone who enjoys the game of baseball can appreciate this book. We all hear about the current state of the industry, but few really understand how or why the status quo evolved. This book does a good job of providing a history of the antitrust exemption, free agency, and many other topics which still play a major role in the game today.

Don't be a hater Roger jus cause you ain't makin big bucks
I think that Roger can't get over the fact that other people in the world are getting paid more than himself. What probably pisses him off even more is that it is a job (playing baseball) that he believes not to be worthy enough of such pay. He is a jealous and judgemental author who has nothing better to do then hate on well known athletes that succeed his pay check. His facts are good though, and he makes a good case. His book is just his opinion though which I disagree with which is basically the reason I ddin't enjoy reading it.

Baseball Economics
If you are looking to gain a better understanding of salary economics related to baseball, search no further. The Money Pitch is a good resource to educate any reader about the principles and logic behind such a huge economic enterprise. This book is very informative and reveals many facts that are not common knowledge. Upon reading this book one gains a new perspective toward baseball and broadens his understanding of how economics are applied in sports.

The Business of Baseball
I feel that this Novel was well written but almost too in depth. Abrams throws so many facts and ideas at the reader that it is often overwhelming and hard to follow. He uses amazing analogies and anecdotes to help an average reader understand more about baseball. When you are able to feel the passion in his writing the novel gets very entertaining and at the same time you are underdstanding elements of the game which you could not learn by watching a game. He discusses free agency and various elements of the game as well as the origins of baseball. Overall I felt it was worth my time and I am pleased that a book laced with economics could be so interesting.

A book for baseball and Americana fans
Highly entertaining and informative book about the 1903 series includes historical backgrounds of early baseball. However American history fans will also enjoy stories of the people of Boston and Pittsburgh of that era.Well researched.Only quibble is the lack of footnotes, though a bibliography is included.

Engage, but Hedge
This Rand Corporation report, prepared for the U.S. Air Force, presents a tight, concise analysis of the current and future Sino-U.S. relationship. Zalmay Khalilzad and company don't present anything new or earth shaking, nor should they have since the purpose was to analyze and present information useful to policy makers. It's a good Rand report, as most are, and is a good reference -- reassuring to those who have spent time studying the issues, and informative to those just embarking on careers as defense analysts.

The central theme of "The United States and a Rising China" is that our policy toward China should be a combination of the current "engagement" approach and "containment" -- "congagement" is the term coined by the authors. This modified engagement/containment approach recognizes China as a rising power, one which will have a gross national product equivalent to the United States in a few decades or so. It encourages continuation of enhanced economic, political and cultural ties with China, but would be "less solicitous of Chinese sensitivities on such issues as human rights." The key to success of such a policy would be to maintain a balance in the application of its co-principles of engagement and containment.

"The United States and a Rising China" covers these topics in some detail: determinants of Chinese national security behavior (which I found of interest); China's military modernization (which is a good summary, but lacks depth); and U.S. policy options (which are worth a look).

Perhaps most valuable is the analysis that looks at future military implications of a more powerful China. It's not that they would pose a threat as a peer competitor. Rather, China appears to be increasingly capable of projecting power in a limited way around its peripheral areas while still maintaining enough of a strategic capability to give caution.

So, the recommendation of the authors is to continue engagement with China, but to also hedge our bets against a future, possibly threatning regional power. The Rand analysts look out only to 2015 in assessing military capabilities of China. I found this a little bit of an analytical hedge, since Chinese analysts themselves are looking out 20 to 30 years with respect to a true military revolution in technological, doctrinal and organizational change; and the U.S. Air Force itself has studied future military capabilities to 2025.
