The Best Photographic Atlas For Human Gross Anatomy
To all those who are looking for a photographic atlas of anatomy, LOOK NO FURTHER THAN McMINN's. This atlas has dissections and photos that are the epitomy of anatomical science. The book itself is beautifully organized into logical sections that integrate osteology, myology, and anatomy into a comprehensive package. After I read this book, I was ready for anything my professors could dish out on practicals. However, for written (theoretical) anatomy, you will need a descriptive atlas (I recommend Grant's). All in all, this book is extremely useful, and I recommend it to any allied health student who has to take anatomy.

The most beautiful anatomy photographs ever published!
The photos in this atlas could be exhibited in an art gallery: the dissections are pure class and the photography is breathtaking. I had no problems whatsoever identifying what was what because (1) there aren't arrows all over the place (the features are labelled with numbers) and (2) the size and resolution of the images are life-size or close (not those tiny pictures in other atlases and previous editions of this atlas). For the head and neck, no atlas can come close: the photos are exceptionally good (even for an atlas of this class) and show different perspectives of the same aspect in good quantity. Quantity however is the downside for the rest of the atlas. Although the photographs are great, there aren't really enough pictures for you to have a satisfying review session. It's probably this fact, and the high price of this book, that has caused Rohen & Yokochi's colour atlas to head the market in its stead. Rohen & Yokochi is a great atlas, but McMinn's is a GREAT atlas. If there were only more photos in McMinn's, all other atlases would be out of print.

Excellent Source of Knowledge
This CD is just fantastic ! Being a medical student... I was in total awe when Professor Peter Abrahams presented this to our class. Never was my attention so focused on one thing. I highly recommend this CD to any person in the medical field and who is interested in having an excellent grasp on the Anatomy of the Human Body. This CD gives a 3D aspect on every aspect of the human body - bones, muscles, joints etc and that's just the beginning. This is definitely one you should have as part of your medical resources.

THANKS FOR THE "A" MYRNA!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Before I bought "Exploring Medical Language" I knew absolutely nothing, and I mean nothing about Medical Terminology.
And to tell you the truth, when I first opened this huge, intimidating, monster of a book, It scared... me... I mean, wouldn't "rhabdomyosarcoma" or "esophagogastroduodenoscopy"
frighten you (just a bit) I thought, nooooo way.

But I opened it, read it, did the cool excersises, listen the the audio tapes, played a bit with the CD-R.

She begins at the beginning.....Little baby steps.

All of a sudden... I was like, I get it! I really get it!
Not only that, but I was beginning to enjoy it.

The prefix, suffix, and word roots suddenely become beautiful, flowing words that make sense.
Myrna LaFleur Brooks made this book come alive, interesting, and allowed medical language to become a little bit like music.
Well, a little!!!! Thanx for the "A" Myrna!

This text is invaluable
I'm currently using this book as a supplemental text for my paramedic training. We've just finished cardiology, and I couldn't have done it without this text. I already owned Phalen, Dubin, and Huff; all are good, but the Huszar text is now the one I go to first when I have a question about ECG's. There are a multitude of practical illustrations, tables, and review questions. Best of all is the 200-and-some strips for practice in the appendix. Highly recommend!!

A wonderful, readable, introduction to Kuyper's Calvinism
As a non-seminarian Calvinist, I originally approached this book with mixed emotions. On one hand, I knew absolutely nothing about Kuyper, other than he was considered a great theologian by other Christian writers whom I respected. On the other hand, personal experience has often proved that theological works are difficult and dry reading.

I was absolutely pleased with Heslam's book and now realize how fortunate I am to have found it as my initial introduction to this great Dutchman. First, it provided me with sufficient background on the man Kuyper before launching into an analysis of Kuyper's 1898 Stone lectures. Second, the author uses the Stone lectures to provide a general overview on the content and development of Kuyper's Calivinist theology. He does an excellent job of capturing the whole Kuyper--from his brillance to his bombast.

Despite the fact I have occassionally and informally been reading works on Calvinism for the last ten years, this book shed significant light for me on many issues that I had never before fully understood.

While the author stresses that Kuyper must be viewed within the times he lived in, I certainly saw the relevance of his teachings on Christian worldview for today. I highly recommend this book!

It doesn't end in Jerusalem
This spellbinding novel is surely a masterpiece of international espionage, making a Jewish woman the heroine who has more luck and chutzpah than intelligence. Not much can be said against the politically correct opinion that all evil in this world comes from the Nazis. As a German woman, I often cringe how simple it is to slander the intents of the Third Reich; vae victis. The author tries to be fair in his world views and spins a compelling yarn of events to solve a kidnapping. The literary style of Mr. Abrahams is lively fluency, great imagination, and interesting depictions of Jerusalem's milieu. Gerborg

Of the people, by the people, for the people by Abe Lincoln
This book is one of the best, if not the best of the new Lincoln books of this year. Gabor Borit is one of Americas most revered Lincoln scholors, and this book shows why. A must read if you enjoy the history of the Civil War and Lincoln.

Sumptuous Photography
The quality of this book is what first grabs you. The paper is thick, glossy and has weight, it reproduces 19th century photographs beautifully. The text is ancillary and never intrudes upon the primary focus here, which are the photographs of Lincoln, his family and the people who shaped his extraordinary life. The text illuminates and expands upon the photographs, giving dates and other pertinent information.

If you're looking for a full-scale biography of Lincoln, look elsewhere, this is primarily a visual treat and one of the better photographic compilations on any President.

Gorgeous
Kudos to the publisher Knopf and all involved on the quality of this book. The reproduction of the 19th century photographs is first rate. The sepia toned image of the great man inside the front cover is exceptionally gorgeous - just breathtaking.

John Updike said Knopf publishes the most physically beautiful books in America, and this book leads me to believe he's right.

This is not a comprehesive, scholarly biography of Lincoln, nor does it pretend to be. But the text reads well, and the Lincoln photographs are beautiful, all-inclusive and presented in sound written context. The large size of the book works particularly nicely here. Well done!

Brilliant narrative and photography of Abraham Lincoln
Philip B. Kunhardt is to be highly commended for this outstanding photographic history of Abraham Lincoln. Not only are the photographs captivating, but the narrative of Lincolns life and the important events during his lifetime are interesting and enhance this book. Many interesting stories go along with the photographs of Lincoln from his 40's to his last days, however the most interesting part in my opinion is the month by month account of his presidency and the important events that occured. So much about the man has been written, but until this book was published not as many photos of President Lincoln were circulated or published. Just as important, are the events and stories which swirled around Lincoln. From his habits and humor to his history changing decisions are written in clarity and interesting form. His life and his loves are given with compassion, and his impossible losses of his sons and his mentally unballanced wife Mary Todd Lincoln is given unflinchingly. The last chapter of the book is about the assassination and the controversy surrounding Lincoln's remains, a very interesting and informative chapter to close with. I highly recommend this book to anyone with an interest in U.S. History or 19th Century U.S. History.

PSYCHOPATHIC FAN SAVES THE RED SOX?
Gil Renard is a failed knife salesman, failed husband and a failed father. Gil lives in the distant past when he was twelve years old and the MVP of his little league team. Gil is fueled by rage at the world who doesn't see his importance. Gil is going to prove to the world that he does matter by getting baseball player Bobby Rayburn out of his batting slump, no matter who or what gets in his way.

This book is a slow read and doesn't get going at all until the last sixty pages when Gil's pent up rage explodes.

great read, quick, action-packed thriller
I gave this to a female friend and she was hesitant because there was a baseball on the cover. "It's not just about baseball," I told her. She returned it a day later saying she stayed up until she finished it. Being from Boston area made book fun and I could visualize scenes. Youn start out feeling bad for Gil, but, oh, do things change.

If it's suspense that you want...
Abrahams weaves a compact tale about NO ONE versus SOMEONE, while the two of them really suffer from the same affliction: they take themselves too seriously. Using baseball as a backdrop, Abrahams draws us in as the two main characters converge and collide. A good, quick, suspenseful read, especially for the baseball fan

STRONG EFFORT
Mr. Abrahams can write! Lights Out is a well written and engrossing read. However, the ending was so depressing that I'm not sure I will be able to read another of his novels. He is the master of sympathetic tragic character

Nice, tight and fast read
I had never heard of Peter Abrahams until I saw his name mentioned four times in the recommended authors section of the Stephen King book "On Writing". Since then I have become a fan.

"Lights Out" is typical of Abrahams' free flowing easy to read style and the length of this book, and infact most of his books, allow for a good 5 to 6 hour read.

The juxtaposition of past and present in this novel is handled immaculately and the ending, although surprising, isn't so difficult to rationalize.

The character of Eddie Nye is well created, gets the reader's sympathy, and I could imagine a movie of this book with the lead being played by one of our better young actors. I hope that will happen.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I am eagerly looking forward to "The Tutor".

The best book I read so far!!!
Lights out is a very suspensive book, inetersting, you won't get bored with it, very well written, simply the best!

Excellent book for the undergraduate dental student.
I would like to see a more complete version of this book written for the professionals. It provides a good review of the topic although at times lacking in depth. Highly recommended for the dental student.

excellent text
less comprehensive than Shafer's but it is more direct to the target and more actually clinically oriented. thanks to the authors

excellent oral pathology text, a must for any dental prof.
The text is an exellent analysis and summation of many common and uncommon disorders. The text builds and updates the previous publicaions which in my opinion are some of the most useful works in oral pathology. Clear, concise, understandible and well organized. This text should be in every Dental and Medical professionals library. Dr. Steven Sudbrink, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon.

Mine Boy

The first modern novel of black South Africa
Xuma is a black country boy who moves to Johannesburg to look for work in the gold mines. Upon his arrival in town, a strong but kind woman named Leah takes him into her bootlegging household. She introduces him to Eliza, the girl Xuma loves but can't have, and Maisy, the girl he can have but doesn't want. He is given a rude awakening to race relations in the city and witnesses first-hand the brutality of the Johannesburg police force. While Xuma's great strength makes him a successful mine boy, he remains a second-class citizen under the apartheid regime. As the novel closes, Xuma's boss and friend Paddy helps him finally come to the realization that blacks and whites can be brothers after all.

A Historical Landmark in South African History
I read this book for my course on South African History, and though it may not be very well written (English is Abrahams' second lanugage, and the prose comes off as very stiff), it is nevertheless a landmark acheivement in South African History. At the time when it was published, 1946, no book had been written about racial tension in South Africa, especially fom the eyes of a Black South African. Historically and politically a triumph, this book is as important to South Africa as "Uncle Tom's Cabin" is to the United States.

The first REAL book about apartheid
Peter Abrahams has certainly written an unsung novel here, which is devastatingly simple (in some places too simple), concentrating on the story of Xuma, a young man who has moved from the North of South Africa (Vrededorp) to the hate-filled apartheid world of Johannesburg. Filling it up with supporting characters which are rather cardboard (the black girl who dreams of being white, the drunken South Africans, the sympathetic white man) does not help, but nonetheless instead of spitefully showing us the huge hate Abrahams may hold for the apartheid system, we instead hear the story of Xuma coping in Jo'burg, with all the horrors being just there in the background. Abrahams does not emerge with a conclusion of black superiority and that whites should leave, but through Xuma, we very clearly see that both races should just get along. For anyone with a serious interest in apartheid, this book is a must!
